Flu Spreads Rapidly Across the United States
Date: February 8, 2017
According to the latest FluView report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu is rapidly spreading across the country. Forty states have reported widespread activity as the nation nears the peak of flu season. More than 12,000 cases have been reported, including 15 pediatric deaths. The proportion of people visiting their healthcare providers due to flu-like symptoms is currently at 3.9 percent, which is above the national baseline of 2.2 percent.
Throughout the United States, influenza activity is on the rise. On the west coast, 14 people under the age of 65 have died this flu season in California, compared to three deaths at the same time last year. According to Dr. Michael Neely, interim chief of infectious disease at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, "if you compare this time last year we're seeing twice as many flu cases...if it keeps going up at this rate and stays up then we will see a lot more cases this year." The Midwest is also experiencing a spike in influenza cases. The state of Oklahoma reports that 54 individuals were hospitalized or died due to influenza during the short time period from January 4 through January 10, increasing the total count of hospitalizations for the season overall to 226. In Pennsylvania, the number of confirmed flu cases has reached 10,766, and the number of deaths for the entire season is now up to 12.
The good news is that the 2016-2017 flu season was relatively late in getting started, so there is still time to get protection against the flu before it spreads to your area. CDC advises that the influenza vaccine continues to be the single best way for people to protect themselves against this deadly virus. Since it takes approximately 14 days before the vaccine reaches its full effectiveness, taking action now is more important than ever. Be prepared to protect your patients today.
