A study conducted by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was published on February 12th in the Pediatrics journal. The study examined six flu seasons from 2010-2016, and found with flu related deaths in children younger than 18 years of age, that children under the age of 2 had the highest mortality rate.

The study also examined the quick rate at which the flu can become life-threatening for children. Only 22 percent of the children in this study were vaccinated against the flu, and nearly two thirds of children died within just seven days of exhibiting symptoms. The findings also revealed that antiviral treatment was only given in about half of all reported pediatric flu deaths. CDC confirms that "flu antiviral drugs be started as soon as possible when young children and children with high-risk conditions are suspected of having the flu."

This study highlights the need to improve flu vaccination in children, as well as antiviral administration once the flu is contracted. Previous studies found that fewer than 40 percent of children who died were healthy, meaning that they had no underlying high-risk medical conditions. In contrast, this latest study revealed that half of the flu related deaths occurred in otherwise healthy children, verifying that they actually are at risk. Parents should be reminded of the importance of making sure their children receive a flu vaccination each year, and to seek prompt medical care for children that have high-risk conditions should they contract the flu
